How to value your goods, skills and services.

We operate on a simple principle: everyone has something valuable to offer.

A trade is fair when both members are happy with the exchange.

People join for different reasons, and your motivation shapes what a trade is worth to you. You might be looking to save cash on wellness or repairs, build community or reduce waste by sharing surplus produce.

How to value your offer

You can use the following equation:

time spent x skill level + material costs = your offer’s value

Start with the time and labor spent planning, traveling, or doing the work. Factor in your skill and expertise, since training or physical strain adds value to that time. Bear in mind materials and supplies you might need.

Once you’ve determined your offer’s value, explore the directory and see what catches your eye. Before reaching out, double-check with yourself: "Is this a trade I’m genuinely excited about?"

How to set up a trade.

Step 1. Find a Match: Browse the directory for a match with what you offer or need. If an offer catches your eye but you don't have an exact match for the requester's needs, you can reach out but don’t be too disappointed if it doesn’t work out.

Step 2. Work Out the Details: Send a quick text or email letting them know what you can share and what you’re hoping to get back. Give everyone about a week to reply. Be explicit about what your service includes (and what it doesn't) before starting to avoid scope creep.

Here is an example note you can send to get things started:

“Hello ! I noticed your listing on Cashless Collective and wanted to connect. I would love to share my [goods, products, or services] in exchange for your [what they offer]. Drop me a message if you would be open to swapping together!“

Step 3. Agree on the trade: Chat with your partner to align on specifics, timing, and location. Communication is key! You are free to walk away anytime before the exchange starts, but once you've received their offer, always follow through on yours.

Best trading practices.

  1. Confirm in writing what, how and when you’re exchanging.

  2. Be honest about skill levels: Accurately describe your expertise—if you are preparing a simple home-cooked dish, avoid presenting it as a professional culinary experience.

  3. Strictly cashless: Financial transactions are not a part of our community. Accepting money (even as partial compensation) violates our group guidelines. Maintaining a complete absence of currency prevents misunderstandings and ensures members do not use our community for personal sales promotions.

  4. Practice grace and goodwill: Approach every interaction with kindness. Remember we are all navigating this life the best way we know how. Make sure to ask yourself before committing to a trade: "Does this trade feel balanced to me?" A quick conversation up front sets clear expectations for both sides.
